Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with President Xi Jinping on the last day of his visit to the Chinese capital Beijing.
A total of 17 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed between the two countries during the visit, which is expected to further strengthen Bangladesh-China bilateral relations.
Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson and Advisor Mahdi Amin said that out of the 17 agreements, 13 were signed between various ministries of the two countries, 3 between the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and relevant Chinese institutions, and one between the BNP and the Communist Party of China.
He said that during the visit, China’s top leaders recalled China’s historical relations with martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and praised their contributions.
Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir said the prime minister reiterated Bangladesh’s support for the ‘one China policy’ in the meeting. However, he also clarified that there was no discussion on the Taiwan issue.
Meanwhile, Humayun Kabir described Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s private meeting with Xi Jinping as ‘unprecedented’. He said that the separate private meeting between the two leaders after the formal meeting is a reflection of the special importance China attaches to Bangladesh.
The two leaders met with their delegations for about 50 minutes at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday morning. They then held separate private meetings. On the last day of the visit, the Prime Minister also met with two other top Chinese leaders.
