Iran has temporarily suspended all indirect talks and document exchanges with the United States amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Tehran said the dialogue, conducted through mediators, would remain suspended for the time being and that there was no possibility of returning to talks until certain conditions were met.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported the decision on Monday (June 1). The report said Iran made the decision based on the situation in Gaza and Lebanon and allegations of ceasefire violations.
According to Iran, the resumption of indirect dialogue with the United States requires an end to Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, and Tehran also wants to see clear progress on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.
Fears of further escalation of regional tensions
Iranian media reported that the situation has reached a new level with increased military activity in southern Lebanon. At the same time, the report also noted that Israeli forces have issued warnings to residents in some areas of Beirut’s southern suburbs ahead of a possible military operation.
According to analysts, this situation could further complicate the security environment in the Middle East and make the path to a diplomatic solution more difficult.
New concerns over Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb
The Tasnim report also claims that Iran and its allies are considering alternative measures regarding the security and control of strategic sea lanes, of which the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait are particularly important.
A large part of the world’s energy transport depends on these two waterways. As a result, international observers fear that if tensions increase in these areas, it could have a major impact on the international energy market, maritime trade, and the global economy.
