Iran has deployed light, domestically built, specialized submarines in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy has dubbed the submarines “dolphins of the Persian Gulf,” amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Citing Iranian defense sources, state media outlet Perstudi reported that the submarines are capable of monitoring and intercepting enemy shipping. At the same time, they can conduct operations while remaining underwater for long periods of time.
Iranian Navy Commander Admiral Shahram Irani said in a statement that these light submarines, built using domestic technology, are capable of playing an effective role in confronting potential threats by deploying them in the vast area of the Strait of Hormuz. These vessels also have the ability to intercept and strike enemy ships if necessary.
He also said that one of the characteristics of submarines is that they can operate secretly by staying on the seabed for long periods of time. That is why they are called the ‘dolphins of the Persian Gulf’.
The Iranian Navy claims that the submarines recently participated in a naval exercise in the Strait of Hormuz. During the exercise, the submarines surfaced and conducted various demonstration activities before returning to the deep sea.
According to analysts, such military activity by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transportation routes, could further sensitize the regional security situation. The move is seen as significant, especially in the context of ongoing tensions with the United States and its allies.
However, Iran has claimed that the deployment is purely defensive and part of strengthening the country’s maritime security.
