The United States has said it does not want to engage in a direct confrontation with Iran. However, there is no question of accepting unilateral dominance in the region.
Speaking at a press conference at the Pentagon, Pete Hegeth said Washington’s goal is not conflict, but to ensure free navigation on international waterways.
“The United States will strengthen the security of commercial shipping in the region through a special naval operation called “Project Freedom”,” he said. Its aim is to reduce Iran’s alleged control or influence and ensure open waterways under international law.
The United States’ defense minister also said the operation would not require direct access to Iranian airspace or waters. The main objective is to protect commercial vessels from potential risks.
“We don’t want any war. However, it will not be accepted if anyone tries to establish a monopoly on international waterways.”
On the other hand, Iran has long been talking about its influence in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been tense between the two countries.
According to analysts, the United States has taken a policy of maintaining influence in the region through strategic pressure instead of direct military confrontation.
