Eight airports in the country have been put on high alert considering the potential security risks, said the Civil Aviation Authority chairman. Mostafa Mahmud Siddique.
In the capital’s Kurmitola on Monday, he said the airports are always under security. However, security has been tightened after receiving a precautionary letter from the Bangladesh Police Headquarters.
He said it was part of regular security measures, but additional precautions have been taken considering the current situation. All concerned units have been directed to take special measures.
Security and intelligence surveillance have been stepped up in key areas of the airport. Additional members of the dress and white outfits have been deployed. Searches have been stepped up at the arrival and exit terminals and have been ordered to report immediately if any suspicious suspicious is found.
A senior official said there was no direct threat of security. Security has been tightened at all airports as a precaution. Night security has also been ordered at airports that do not fly at night.
On April 23rd, the police headquarters alerted the concerned agencies through an official letter in view of the intelligence warnings about a possible plan of a banned militant organisation.
The letter identified the national parliament, police and military installations, places of worship, entertainment centres and other important infrastructure as potential risk. It also highlights the threat of extremist activities, communication networks and coordinated attacks.
Law enforcement officials said surveillance, intelligence coordination and security preparations have been tightened in vulnerable places to deal with potential threats. However, the Civil Aviation Authority said it was mainly a precautionary measure and the situation was being closely monitored.
