BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has decided to give up the Bogra-6 seat despite winning two seats in the 13th National Parliament election . He is retaining the Dhaka-17 seat.
As per the decision, the Election Commission has started the process of declaring the Bogra-6 seat vacant .
On Monday (February 16), EC Secretary Akhtar confirmed the matter and said that Tarique Rahman’s written exemption letter has been received and preparations are underway to publish the gazette. According to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), if elected to more than one seat, there is an obligation to choose one seat within 30 days of the gazette publication.
In the elections held on February 12, Tarique Rahman received 72,699 votes in Dhaka-17 constituency and more than 216,000 votes in Bogra-6 constituency. If the Bogra-6 constituency becomes vacant, a by-election must be held there within 90 days as per the law.
