Writ to cancel Nahid’s candidacy, allegation of dual citizenship

    • A writ petition has been filed in the High Court to cancel the candidacy of National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Md. Nahid Islam for the Dhaka-11 parliamentary election on charges of dual citizenship.

    Jatiya Party candidate Shamim Ahmed filed the writ petition, naming the Chief Election Commissioner, Secretary, Returning Officer and Nahid Islam as defendants.

    The writ petition is likely to be heard by a High Court bench headed by Justice Fatema Najibu. The petition states that Nahid Islam acquired Dominica citizenship on April 20, 2025.

    Earlier, Nahid Islam also filed an application with the High Court to cancel the candidacy of BNP nominated candidate MA Qayyum, which was rejected.

    Dhaka-11 constituency consists of voters from wards 21, 22, 37-42 and Sabujbagh 23 of Dhaka North City Corporation. The total number of voters is 4 lakh 39 thousand 78, out of which 2 lakh 22 thousand 877 are males, 2 lakh 16 thousand 198 are females and 3 are of the third gender.

    Competing against Nahid are BNP’s MA Qayyum, independent Kohinoor Akhter Bithi, Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Front’s Kazi Md. Shahidullah, Gano Forum’s Md. Abdul Quader, Ganodhikar Parishad’s Md. Arifur Rahman, Bangladesh Republican Party’s Md. Zakir Hossain, National People’s Party’s Md. Mizanur Rahman, Jatiya Party’s Shamim Ahmed and Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Sheikh Md. Fazle Bari Masud.
