US President Donald Trump thanked Iran’s leadership for canceling plans to execute hundreds of protesters arrested in the country. In a post on Truth Social on Friday, he said the decision to cancel all scheduled executions had deeply affected him.
The White House said Iranian authorities have suspended nearly 800 executions in the wake of the ongoing protests and the United States is closely monitoring the situation. Trump had previously expressed support for the protesters but warned of tough action against Tehran if the executions were carried out.
On the other hand, the Iranian government has called the protests a ‘riot’ and ‘terrorism’ and accused the US and Israel of being behind them. It is worth noting that violent protests have been taking place in Iran since December 28, but the exact number of casualties and detainees has not yet been released.
