Anti-government protests in Iran have taken a horrific turn. The movement, which began in the capital Tehran, has now spread to all 31 provinces of the country. The influential US magazine Time Magazine claims that more than 200 protesters have been killed in one night in Tehran alone during the ongoing protests.
The report said that security forces opened fire on protesters as the protests escalated on Thursday night. Time reported that at least 217 protesters had died in six hospitals in Tehran, most of them from gunshot wounds, citing a doctor who did not wish to be named.
The magazine commented that if the casualty figures are confirmed, it would indicate the Iranian government’s tough stance in suppressing the protests. Meanwhile, there have been accusations of ignoring warnings from US President Donald Trump.
Thousands of people also took part in protests in Tehran and other cities on Friday night. However, the exact number of casualties could not be independently verified, Time magazine reported.
