The Palestinian embassy in the UK has officially opened, three and a half months after the country was recognised as a state. The embassy of the ‘independent and sovereign state’ of Palestine began operations in London on Monday (January 5).
The new embassy has begun operations in the building of the ‘Palestine Mission in Britain’ located in West London. Hussam Jomlat has taken charge as ambassador.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Hussam Zomlat said, “This is a historic moment. The official journey of the Embassy of the State of Palestine in the UK has begun with full diplomatic status and privileges.” He said that this diplomatic mission was upgraded to an embassy only after the UK recognized Palestine as a state in September 2025.
In the context of Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza and the humanitarian disaster, several countries, including Australia, Spain, and Canada, recognized Palestine as a state. The West Bank is currently under the control of the Fatah alliance, led by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).
It is worth noting that the Israeli attack on Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, has so far killed at least 70,700 Palestinians and injured more than 171,000 people.
