Petro has issued a strong message to the country’s armed forces in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s threats to Colombian President Gustavo Petro after the unprecedented military operation in Venezuela to detain President Nicolas Maduro.
In a post on social media, the Colombian president said that any member of the armed forces who prefers the US flag over the Colombian national flag will be immediately expelled from the force. He said that according to the constitution, the main duty of the army is to protect the sovereignty of the people.
Petro criticized Trump, saying he was threatening a Latin American leader who emerged from the struggle of the people and the peace movement. He called on Trump to stop spreading misinformation, noting that there is no case against him in court records.
Earlier on Sunday, while speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Donald Trump referred to Colombia and Venezuela as countries in deep crisis and warned of a military operation in Colombia.
On this day, Trump also said that if India does not stop buying oil from Russia, tariffs on the country may be increased.
