Major General (Retd.) Mahmudul Hasan, a repeatedly elected member of parliament from Tangail-5 (Sadar) constituency, former Home Minister and BNP Vice Chairman, has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 90 years old at the time of his death.
He breathed his last at his residence in the capital on Wednesday (December 31) at around 3:30 pm due to old age. He is survived by a son, a daughter and numerous relatives and well-wishers.
According to family sources, the funeral prayers of the deceased will be held on Thursday (January 1) after Zohr at the Bindubasini Government Boys High School grounds in Tangail city.
Meanwhile, his death has cast a shadow of mourning over the political arena of the country, including Tangail. BNP central and local leaders have expressed deep grief over the death of the deceased.
It is worth mentioning that Mahmudul Hasan was born on March 1, 1936, in Makorkol village of Tangail Sadar Upazila. He served as the Home Minister during President Ershad’s regime. In his political career, he was first elected as a member of parliament as a candidate of the Jatiya Party in 1988. Later, he was elected as a member of parliament from the BNP in 1996, 2001 and 2012, representing the Tangail-5 constituency.
