Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). She breathed her last at 6 am on Tuesday.
BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman confirmed the news of the death. The information was also shared on the BNP media cell and the party’s verified Facebook page.
Khaleda Zia had been suffering from various ailments including heart disease, diabetes, kidney complications, and liver cirrhosis for a long time. She was admitted to a private hospital in the capital on November 23 due to breathing problems. Despite treatment under the supervision of local and foreign experts, her physical condition deteriorated.
Khaleda Zia was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh three times and made history as the country’s first female Prime Minister. Born in Dinajpur on August 15, 1945, Khaleda Zia became the Chairperson of the BNP in 1984. In her long political career, she has never lost an election—a rare example in Bangladeshi politics.
His death has cast a shadow of mourning over the country’s political arena.
