Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division is going to be appointed as the 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. He will replace the current Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. The government will soon publish a gazette in this regard, sources said. He will take oath on December 28.
The current Chief Justice, Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, is retiring on December 27 after completing 67 years of age as per the constitution. In his absence, Zubair Rahman Chowdhury is already serving as the acting Chief Justice.
Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury was enrolled as a lawyer in the Judicial Court in 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. In 2003, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division and became a permanent judge two years later. He assumed office as a judge of the Appellate Division on August 12 this year.
After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law from Dhaka University, he pursued higher education in international law in the UK. His appointment is seen by those concerned as a part of continuity in the country’s judicial system, given his long judicial experience and professional skills.
