The funeral prayer of Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Abdul Karim Khandaker, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Great Liberation War and the first Air Chief of independent Bangladesh, was held at the capital’s Air Force Base Bashar on Sunday. Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus participated in the prayer.
Before the funeral, a state-level funeral parade of freedom fighter AK Khandaker was held. Advisors to the interim government, chiefs of the three services and high-ranking military and civilian officials were present at the event.
After the funeral, the Military Secretary placed a wreath on the coffin on behalf of the President. After that, the Chief Advisor Professor Yunus, the Adviser on Liberation War Affairs, and the Chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force paid their respects one by one. A fly-past by the Air Force paid tribute to the deceased.
Before the funeral, the deceased’s son, Zafrul Karim Khandaker, gave a brief speech.
AK Khandaker, who was awarded the title of Bir-Uttam, passed away due to old age on Saturday morning. His contribution as an organizer of the Liberation War, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Mukti Bahini and one of the architects of the defense system of independent Bangladesh will be forever remembered in the history of Bangladesh.
