The body of Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inqilab Manch and one of the faces of the July Revolution, who died while undergoing treatment in Singapore, has arrived in Dhaka. His body landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-385 at around 5:45 pm on Friday.
Earlier, he died while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital around 9:30 pm on Thursday. After the news reached the country, protests spread to various places including the capital. Students of government and private universities including Dhaka University held processions, and angry crowds took to several important roads including Shahbagh.
It is worth mentioning that on December 12, Osman Hadi was seriously injured in a gunshot from a moving motorcycle during an election campaign in the capital’s Bijoynagar area. After being treated first at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later at a private hospital, he was taken to Singapore for advanced treatment. He died there after six days of fighting.
His death has created an atmosphere of deep grief and tension in the political and social arena.
