Interim government’s Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday urged citizens to protect the country’s youth, saying their safety is vital to safeguarding Bangladesh’s democracy and sovereignty.
Addressing the nation on Victory Day, Dr Yunus said the youth have become the strongest barrier against the return of defeated forces that fled the country. He warned of renewed attempts to destabilise the nation ahead of the upcoming national election, describing these efforts as aimed at regaining power before public support and external backing diminish.
The Chief Adviser strongly condemned the recent shooting of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman bin Hadi, calling it an attack on Bangladesh’s democratic journey. He said the government is treating the incident with utmost seriousness, that suspects have been identified, and that no one involved will be spared. Hadi, now undergoing treatment in Singapore, is receiving full medical and security support from the government.
Calling for unity and restraint, Dr Yunus appealed to citizens not to fall for rumours or propaganda. He emphasised the need for a peaceful and festive atmosphere in the two months leading up to the election.
“We must protect our youth to protect our country,” he said, expressing confidence that the fearless younger generation would help prevent violence and ensure a free, peaceful and credible election.
