At least six people have been killed in a deadly shooting during the Jewish Hanukka festival in Sydney’s popular Bondi beach. Police said the attack was carried out by the father and son — which has reshuffled the country.
According to the New South Wales Police, 24-year-old Naveed Akram and his 50-year-old father opened fire indiscriminately at the Hanukka by the Sea event on Sunday evening. The victims were between the ages of 10 and 87. Many children, families and tourists were injured in the attack.
Footage captured by the drone showed an attacker who was shooting from a pedestrian bridge. He was shot and down by police. Others were still standing downstairs and shooting at the crowd. Witnesses said at least 50 rounds of bullets were fired in the Campbell parade area in about ten minutes.
According to police, Naveed Akram is a resident of Sydney’s Bonirig area. Before the attack, he told his mother that he was going to fish. He was arrested and is currently undergoing treatment in police custody. His father was shot dead by police on the spot.
The condition of several of the injured is critical. A child died while undergoing treatment at a children’s hospital in Sydney. The dead included British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger.
“There is no place for hatred, violence and terrorism in Australia,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement. He assured the full accountability of those responsible for the attack.
Australia’s intelligence agency said one of the attackers had previously been seen but was not immediately considered a threat.
