Sharif Osman Hadi, an independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency and spokesperson of Inqilab Manch, was shot during an election campaign. He was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 2:35 pm on Friday.
Israfil Faraizi, one of the organizers of July Unity, said that unknown assailants opened fire on him during the campaign.
Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that a team has been sent to the Bijoynagar area, the scene of the incident. He added, “Details will be announced after verifying the incident.”
Hadi had previously spoken publicly in November about receiving threats from multiple domestic and foreign numbers to kill, arson, and rape women in his family. He wrote on Facebook on November 14, “I am being constantly monitored; I and my family have been threatened with harm.”
Tension prevails in the area following the incident, and security forces are monitoring the situation.
