In Dhaka, DB officials arrested journalist and former president of the National Press Club Shawkat Mahmud from his Malibagh residence on Sunday afternoon. He has been taken to the Detective Branch office in the capital, confirmed DMP Media and Public Relations Division Deputy Police Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman.
Authorities said he was arrested under what case, but no official information has been provided yet.
Shawkat Mahmud is serving as the Secretary General of the recently formed ‘Janata Party Bangladesh’. The chairman of the party is actor Ilias Kanchan. Earlier, he was the Vice Chairman of BNP.
Although questions have been raised in various quarters about the actions of law enforcement agencies in this incident, authorities have said they are waiting for an official explanation.
