At least 23 people were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a popular nightclub in North Goa’s Arpora area in the middle of the night, local authorities have confirmed. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the incident as a “painful day for Goa” early Sunday.
Several tourists were among the dead in the fire that broke out on Saturday night. According to PTI, the fire is believed to have started after a gas cylinder exploded at the club called ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’. Three people died of burns and the rest died of smoke inhalation.
Chief Minister Sawant has ordered an investigation after visiting the scene and has promised strict action against those responsible. The Director General of Goa Police said all the bodies have been recovered and the fire has been brought under control.
This incident has raised new questions about the weaknesses of Goa’s tourism security system.
