Three Supreme Court lawyers have sent a legal notice to the government, giving it 24 hours to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam for allegedly failing to shirk responsibility in the BDR mutiny investigation. The notice sent on Thursday asked four top administrative officials, including the principal secretary to the chief advisor, to take action in the matter.
Lawyers have warned that they will approach the court if the removal is not done within the stipulated time.
The recent report by the National Independent Commission of Inquiry named several high-ranking police officers, including the current IGP, for their failure to perform their duties in the 2009 Peelkhana massacre. The report has sparked widespread discussion in the administration since its release.
A total of 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the incident on February 25-26, 2009. The subsequent trial resulted in the death penalty and various sentences for many members. However, the quality of the investigation and trial was questioned by the victims, which eventually paved the way for the formation of an independent investigation commission in December last year. The commission submitted its final report to the chief advisor on November 30.
