Tanvir Mahmud (55), the managing director of Hallmark Group and one of the convicted accused in the much-discussed Hallmark scam, has died in prison after falling ill. Prison authorities confirmed his death while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.
Prison officials said he was sent to the hospital from the prison after he suddenly fell ill in the afternoon. After regular treatment and tests, he was kept under special observation in the evening when his condition deteriorated. He died around 10:30 pm.
Tanvir had been suffering from kidney complications, high blood pressure, diabetes and respiratory problems for a long time. He was serving a long prison sentence as a convicted prisoner in cases filed by Ramna and Kafrul police stations.
Last year, a court sentenced Tanvir, his wife Jasmine Islam and nine others to life imprisonment in a case of embezzling money from Sonali Bank by taking loans in the name of a fake organization . The Hallmark corruption scandal of about Tk 4,000 crore that came to light in 2012 became one of the country’s most talked-about financial scandals.
The process of handing over his body has begun after the formalities of the hospital and prison authorities are completed.
