The death toll in the 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck different parts of the country on Friday morning has risen to 11. The local administration has confirmed the highest death toll of five in Narsingdi. Casualties were also reported in Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government holding state duties, expressed deep shock at the casualties.
Four dead in Dhaka
Three people were killed when the roof railing of a building collapsed in the capital’s Armanitola. Sir Salimullah Medical College student Rafiul Islam later died from injuries in the same incident.
A worker died in Gazipur
Sujit Das (38) lost his balance during the earthquake while cutting trees in Kaliganj, Gazipur. Doctors declared him dead when he was taken to a local hospital.
Child dies in wall collapse in Narayanganj
A 10-month-old baby Fatima died when a boundary wall collapsed while she was going outside during the earthquake in Rupganj. The child’s mother and a neighbor were injured and are undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
Five people die in Narsingdi
Five people have been killed in house wall collapses, falling from trees and panic-related accidents in different areas of Narsingdi, the Narsingdi district administration has confirmed. A 10-year-old child and an elderly farmer are among the deceased.
The administration said that a control room has been opened to collect information related to damage and rescue and the situation is being monitored.
