Bangladesh’s dengue crisis shows no sign of easing. In the past 24 hours, five more people have died from the mosquito-borne disease, bringing the total number of deaths this year to 331.
During the same period, 792 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country.
According to the daily bulletin issued Saturday by the Directorate General of Health Services, 347 of the newly hospitalized patients were admitted to facilities in Dhaka, while the rest were treated outside the capital. So far this year, a total of 83,858 dengue patients have been hospitalized, with 80,243 of them discharged after treatment.
Last year marked the worst dengue outbreak in Bangladesh’s history, with more than 321,000 infections and 1,705 deaths. Public health experts warn that the current trend is alarming, especially as the surge in cases shows little sign of slowing, even during the typically low-transmission season.
