Eight like-minded political parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, have announced an indefinite sit-in program in front of the Chief Adviser’s official residence, Jamuna, if their five-point demands are not met by November 16.
The announcement was made on Wednesday (November 12) at a joint press conference. Earlier, on Tuesday (November 11), the parties held a rally at Paltan, demanding the immediate issuance of a constitutional order to implement the July National Charter and the holding of a national referendum within November.
At the rally, Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “No election will be held in 2026 without granting the July Charter a legal basis. Recognizing the July Revolution means giving constitutional legitimacy to the Charter.” He further stated, “The people of the country are united in one demand — a referendum must be held before the national election. If all parties agree, why delay setting the date?”
The five demands of the joint alliance include: issuing a constitutional order to implement the July National Charter, organizing a referendum within November, ensuring a level playing field for all parties in the upcoming election, lifting bans on political organizations, and ensuring justice and compensation for those killed during mass movements. Notably, on November 6, the alliance, led by Jamaat-e-Islami, submitted a memorandum to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. The participating parties are Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Khelafat Majlish, Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Bangladesh Development Party, and the National Democratic Party (JAGPA).
