Bangladesh Bank has not yet released the non-performing loan (NPL) data for the June quarter, despite four months having passed. Analysts fear that revealing the actual figures could create instability in the banking sector.
Experts say withholding the data sends a dangerous signal for the economy. According to central bank sources, the NPL accounts were prepared several months ago but were not published due to pending approval from the Governor.
In the January–March quarter, the total NPL stood at BDT 4,20,334 crore. Analysts estimate that by the April–June quarter, it could exceed BDT 6 lakh crore, and disclosure of this figure may trigger further instability in the banking sector.
Toufiqul Islam Khan, Senior Research Fellow at CPD, stated that revealing NPL figures could negatively impact the overall economy and erode public confidence in banks.
Experts have emphasized the need for strict monitoring and enforcement by Bangladesh Bank to restore discipline and stability in the banking sector.
