Dhaka University has issued show-cause notices to 403 students over allegations of involvement in “illegal and violent” incidents that took place on the campus between July 15 and August 5, 2024. The information was announced in an urgent notice signed by the university’s Proctor and the Member-Secretary of the inquiry committee, Saifuddin Ahmed, on Tuesday.
According to the notice, the initial fact-finding committee identified 128 students and submitted its report. Based on that report, the university’s Syndicate, in its meeting on March 17, decided to temporarily suspend those students. Later, a five-member investigation committee was formed for further inquiry. The committee’s continued investigation revealed the involvement of additional students, bringing the total number of accused to 403.
The accused students have been asked to provide a written explanation within seven working days stating why they should not be permanently expelled. The notice also mentions that if no response is received within the stipulated time, the university will proceed to take action unilaterally according to institutional regulations.
