To ensure a transparent, peaceful, and secure upcoming national election, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has directed the rapid procurement of an adequate number of body-worn cameras for law enforcement agencies. He gave the directive on Tuesday (28 October) during a meeting at the State Guest House, Jamuna.
The meeting was attended by Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Foyez Ahmad Tayyab, Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Police Inspector General (IGP) Baharul Alam, and representatives from other relevant agencies.
Professor Yunus said, “All possible preparations must be completed swiftly to conduct a free and peaceful election. Voters must have confidence that a safe and favorable environment exists for the election.”
He instructed that the procurement process and initial training for the body-worn cameras must be completed by December, so that any election-related violence or undesirable situations can be effectively prevented. He also emphasized, “Alongside enhancing law enforcement capabilities, a system must be established that leaves no room for any deterioration of the situation during the elections.”
Foyez Ahmad Tayyab stated that the available body-worn cameras in the country are already being used for initial training of police personnel. Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury added that once the new cameras arrive, police officers in every district will receive training.
With the help of body-worn cameras, election-time situations at polling stations can be monitored centrally, and it will also be possible to oversee the situation from each police station and district police superintendent’s office.
