Former Army Chief General (Retd.) Iqbal Karim Bhuiya has stated that the current caretaker government may remain in power for another 1–2 years. He added that afterwards, the BNP may come to power through elections. However, whether BNP can complete its full term will depend partly on India’s strategic stance and partly on the Awami League’s recovery and consolidation of strength.
In a Facebook post titled “Where Are We Heading in the Next Five Years?”, he further wrote: “Due to inefficiency, law-and-order deterioration, or pressure from students, if the reform mission falters, the caretaker government may remain in power without elections. During that time, weak ministers may be replaced, and a national unity government may be formed with Dr. Yunus as president.”
He also noted that with rumors of constitutional amendments, the next five years may be marked by confusion, instability, protests, movements, strikes, blockades, and violence. The economy may remain stagnant, the poor will face increased hardships, and Bangladesh will continue to fall behind on socio-economic indicators.
