Renowned writer Rakib Hasan, the creator of the beloved Bangladeshi teen detective series “Tin Goyenda,” has passed away. He breathed his last on Wednesday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. He was 75 years old.
The news of his death was confirmed by Masuma Maimur, advisor to Sheba Prokashoni, the publishing house that released most of his works. She said that Rakib Hasan had been suffering from age-related complications, and both of his kidneys had failed. He died of cardiac arrest during dialysis.
Born on December 12, 1950, in Cumilla, Rakib Hasan spent much of his childhood in Feni, where his father worked. After completing his studies, he tried several jobs but soon realized that the routine of office life was not for him. He chose writing as his lifelong pursuit.
His first published book was a translation under a pseudonym. Later, he published his first work under his real name—an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He also translated “Arabian Nights” and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan.
However, it was his children’s detective fiction that made him a household name. In addition to Tin Goyenda, he wrote two other popular series—“Tin Bondhu” and “Goyenda Kishore Musa Robin.”
The Tin Goyenda series includes 160 books, and Rakib Hasan also translated around 30 other titles.
Rakib Hasan’s contribution to Bangladeshi juvenile literature will be remembered for generations to come.
