Due to heavy rainfall in the upper hills and flash floods, the water level of the Teesta River is approaching the danger mark.
The Water Development Board (WDB) reported that at 9:00 AM on Sunday, the Teesta River at Dalia Point was flowing 15 centimeters below the danger level. By 3:00 PM, the water level had risen further, flowing just 1 centimeter below the danger level.
As a result, low-lying areas, chars, and islands along the Teesta in Gangachara, Kaunia, and Pirgacha upazilas of Rangpur have started to experience flooding. Many people have taken shelter on the Teesta embankment at night fearing further water rise.
Executive Engineer of the WDB, Rabiul Islam, stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in Sikkim (India) and northern Bangladesh, which may continue until October 6. Consequently, the Teesta River water level may rise further and exceed the danger mark. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have been alerted to prevent potential damage.
