Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has expressed hope that the country’s Islamic scholars (Alems) will lead not only mosques but also the nation. He said if Alems actively take part in guiding society, all forms of misdeeds and corruption will be eradicated.
He made these remarks on Saturday afternoon at the Daee and Waez Conference organized by the party’s Central Ulama Committee at Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka.
Shafiqur Rahman said that although 90.8 percent of Bangladesh’s population is Muslim, Jamaat is not in favor of dividing the nation along religious lines. Instead, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians have long lived together peacefully in Bangladesh, making the country a notable example of communal harmony in the world.
He further said that if Alems guide the nation in light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, society will benefit greatly. While certain sections of the educated class sometimes cause harm with the stroke of a pen, Alems bear a special responsibility to awaken and warn the nation against such harms.
“Whenever the nation faces a crisis, Alems must act as guides,” the Jamaat chief said. “Even after so many years of independence, a truly humane and responsible society has not been established. Therefore, to build a better and united nation, the Alems must come forward.”
The conference was presided over by Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Abdul Halim. Among others, the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Rafiqur Islam Khan, and Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair also spoke at the event.
