Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has departed New York for Dhaka after attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He left New York on Tuesday (September 30) at 11:10 p.m. local time, which was 9:10 a.m. Bangladesh time on Wednesday (October 1).
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the United States, Tariq Md. Ariful Islam, saw him off at John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
Dr. Yunus had traveled to New York on September 22. During his visit, he met with U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gore and expressed condolences to the family of Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-origin U.S. police officer killed in a gun attack.
At the UN headquarters, Dr. Yunus spoke at a high-level side event titled “Social Business, Youth, and Technology.” He also addressed the General Assembly session and held meetings with former presidents, prime ministers, and global leaders from 11 different countries.
During the visit, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed full support and solidarity with Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic transition and reform initiatives. Dr. Yunus also called on international human rights activists to visit Bangladesh more frequently.
Concluding his visit, the Chief Adviser delivered a speech at a high-level conference at the UN headquarters on “The Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar.”
