Paying tribute to the late Indian singer Zubeen Garg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Zubeen was the Kohinoor of Assamese culture.” He made the remarks during the radio program Mann Ki Baat on the occasion of Bhupen Hazarika’s birth anniversary.
Modi stated that Zubeen Garg was a popular artist whose music left a lasting impact across the country. His songs will continue to inspire future generations. Although he is no longer physically with us, he will live forever in the hearts of the people.
Zubeen passed away at the age of 52 on September 19 in Singapore due to drowning. In his memory, the Assam government declared three days of state mourning. Additionally, special initiatives have been taken to honor him: his ashes will be distributed among various organizations and individuals through an online application process, and a memorial will be constructed at Kamar Kuchi, a place filled with his childhood memories, where his last rites were performed with state honors.
