At New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain was targeted with eggs by local Awami League activists. He had arrived as part of the delegation accompanying Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Eyewitnesses reported that local Awami League leader Mizanur Rahman was seen throwing the eggs. The incident occurred on September 22 (Monday) around 5 p.m. local time, as Akhtar Hossain exited Terminal 4. He was accompanied by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and NCP Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Jara. During the incident, Awami League supporters also hurled insults at Tasnim Jara and shouted slogans.
According to an airport official, two eggs struck Akhtar Hossain on the back. However, he did not respond and continued walking toward his car. Afterward, Awami League activists lay down in front of the vehicle, chanting slogans including “Joy Bangla.” New York police intervened in an attempt to control the situation.
Earlier in the day, supporters of both BNP and Awami League had gathered outside Terminal 8 of the airport, engaging in rival chanting. Later in the evening, Awami League USA staged a permitted protest outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, where Yunus’s delegation was staying. There too, both sides shouted slogans at each other across the street.
Condemning the incident, NCP leader Akhtar Hossain demanded justice against the Awami League activists involved.
