The Jamaat-e-Islami student wing (Shibir)-backed panel has secured a sweeping victory in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) election. The Election Commission officially announced the results on Saturday afternoon.
According to the results, independent candidate Abdur Rashid Jitu was elected Vice President (VP), while Mohammad Mazharul Islam, a candidate from the Shibir-backed panel, won the General Secretary (GS) post. In addition, Ferdous Al Hasan was elected Assistant General Secretary (AGS – male) and Ayesha Siddika Meghla won the AGS (female) post, both from the Shibir-supported combined student alliance.
The final tally shows that the Shibir-backed alliance secured 21 out of the 25 central posts, including three of the top four positions. Their candidates also won the majority of secretarial positions, including Education & Research, Environment, Literature, Drama, IT, Health, and Transport. The executive member seats were also dominated by Shibir-supported candidates.
In this year’s election, 68 percent of the 11,759 registered voters cast their ballots. A total of 177 candidates contested for the 25 central posts, with 9 vying for VP, 8 for GS, and 16 for AGS. Among them, six were female candidates.
The election featured eight full and partial panels. However, after polling began, allegations of vote rigging prompted five panels, including the BNP-backed student wing, the Progressive Students’ Alliance, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Chhatra Front’s Sangshoptok Parishad, and independents’ Ongikar Parishad, to boycott the election.
The results were declared after 42 hours of vote counting.
