Devapriya Bhattacharya, convener of the Citizens’ Platform and distinguished fellow of CPD, on Monday raised the question at the inauguration of the “Bangladesh Reform Watch” initiative in Gulshan, Dhaka: Has the caretaker government lost its way? He said that the expectations created around the reform process have now largely diminished.
Bhattacharya also noted that the pro-equality spirit achieved through the July uprising is a significant national asset. However, the effectiveness of reforms has been limited due to the lack of participation from marginalized communities, minorities, and disadvantaged groups. He emphasized that accountable citizen pressure is essential for implementation.
CPD fellow Mostafizur Rahman said that many reforms proposed by the 29 task forces in 1991 remain unimplemented. Economist Selim Raihan stated that anti-reform forces still exist within the government. He expressed hope that “Bangladesh Reform Watch” will act as a pressure group to keep political parties accountable.
The event was attended by CPD Chairman Professor Rehman Sobhan as the chief guest, along with political leaders, economists, business figures, and representatives of social organizations.
