Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in China on Saturday (August 30), marking his first visit to the country in seven years. After concluding a two-day trip to Japan, Modi landed in Tianjin, where he received a red-carpet welcome. He is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which brings together more than 20 heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During the visit, Modi will hold a separate meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The talks gain significance as the United States recently imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Relations between New Delhi and Beijing have remained strained since the deadly Galwan Valley clash in Ladakh in 2020. However, both sides have recently taken steps to mend ties, with China’s foreign minister visiting Delhi last month to discuss active cooperation on border issues.
According to Indian media, the Modi–Xi meeting is expected to address the lingering border tensions as well as global concerns such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the Gaza conflict, and U.S. trade tariffs. Modi earlier emphasized that India–China relations are crucial for regional peace and prosperity.
