The Appellate Division has granted permission to appeal against the verdict that annulled the caretaker government system. The Supreme Court of Bangladesh will hear the appeal on October 21. On Wednesday (27 August), the Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refat Ahmed and comprising seven judges, issued the order after the second day of hearing.
Senior lawyers Zainul Abedin, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the petitioners, while Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman appeared for the state. Earlier, four petitions were filed by political parties and six individuals seeking a review of the verdict that annulled the caretaker government system.
The caretaker government system was included in the Constitution through the 13th Amendment in 1996. Although a writ petition was filed in the High Court in 1998 challenging its validity, the High Court upheld the system in 2004. Subsequently, in the appellate process, the Supreme Court annulled the 13th Amendment in 2011. Following this, the 15th Amendment abolished the caretaker government system. After the change of government last year, five prominent individuals, including Sujon secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar, along with leaders of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, filed petitions seeking a review of this verdict.
