Syed Abu Hossain Babla has been appointed as a co-chairman of the National Party, joining the leadership under Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader. Babla, who previously served as a member of the party’s presidium under GM Quader’s leadership, was promoted to the new role following a decision announced in a press release on Monday. The appointment was made by the newly elected chairman, Anisul Islam Mahmud, using the authority granted by the party’s 10th National Council.
Strengthening the Party’s Organizational Framework
Anisul Islam Mahmud expressed confidence that Babla’s leadership would invigorate the party’s organizational activities, stating, “I believe Babla’s strong leadership will make the National Party more dynamic and effective. He will also play an active role in both central and Dhaka South Metropolitan operations.” The party’s latest council was held on Saturday, six years after its previous conference in December 2019. The recent council, held without GM Quader, saw Mahmud elected as chairman and Ruhul Amin Hawlader as secretary-general through a voice vote of nearly 3,000 councilors.
Internal Conflicts and Leadership Shifts
The party has undergone significant turmoil, with GM Quader dismissing 10 leaders—including Anisul Islam Mahmud, Ruhul Amin Hawlader, and Secretary-General Mujibul Haque Chunnu—on July 7. However, after the dismissed leaders obtained a court order temporarily restraining Quader and Joint Office Secretary Mahmud Alam from organizational activities, the dissenting faction proceeded with the National Council without Quader. Meanwhile, Kazi Firoz Rashid of the Raushan Ershad-led faction was named senior co-chairman, while Chunnu, previously expelled by Quader, was appointed executive chairman. The leadership battle continues as the party navigates internal divisions.
