Police have recovered the hanging body of Mosha Maryam Khatun (19), the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, from a flat in the Parliament Building (NAM Bhaban) in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The incident took place on Sunday (September 20) evening.
Police said the cause of death could not be immediately confirmed and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
Police and related sources said that after receiving information around 7 pm, the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station went to the NAM building. The police found Maryam’s body hanging from a fan through the window of a room in the building. Later, the CID’s Crime Scene Unit and the related forensic team were called to the spot.
According to police information, MP Gazi Nazrul Islam was in the flat at the time of the incident. He returned home around 2:15 pm and knocked on the door. Later, he opened the main door with the key but could not open another door inside, so he informed the in-charge of NAM Bhaban. In the evening, the police went and took necessary measures and started the process of recovering the body.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Ibne Mizan said, “Police reached the spot after receiving information. The body was seen hanging from the fan through the window of the room. Evidence is being collected from the spot and further investigation is being conducted with the help of experts from CID and PBI.”
Earlier in July, the issue was widely discussed after a private video of Gazi Nazrul Islam went viral on social media. Gazi Nazrul introduced the young woman as his second wife. Later, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled her from the party after an organizational investigation on charges of “moral lapses”.
Police said that whether Maryam’s death was a suicide or there was some other reason behind it can be confirmed after the investigation and autopsy. The overall circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
