Former Speaker of the National Assembly and former Acting President Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar was laid to rest with state honours on Sunday (July 12) night at the South Plaza of the National Assembly building. Earlier, a second janaza was held there after Asr prayers.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, ruling party Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, cabinet members, members of parliament, representatives of the judiciary and people from different walks of life attended the funeral. They prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased’s soul and paid tribute to his long political and constitutional life.
According to family sources, due to adverse weather conditions, it was not possible to take his body to his native district of Panchagarh. Due to this, it was decided to bury him at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. Before his death, he was undergoing treatment at the Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in the capital for various complications related to old age.
Condolences have been expressed from various levels of the state on the death of Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar. The Speaker of the National Parliament, Deputy Speaker, Chief Justice, Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Attorney General and various lawyers’ organizations of the Supreme Court in separate condolence messages recalled his contribution in his working life and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
