Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson and adviser Mahdi Amin said 10-point urgent steps have been taken under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to deal with the disaster caused by heavy rains, sudden floods and hills in the Chittagong region.
In a Facebook post on Friday (July 10th), he said the government is working swiftly and coordinatedly to deal with the disaster situation, strengthen rescue operations, distribute relief and rehabilitation of the affected people.
The Prime Minister’s Ten Initiatives
1. General Monitoring
The Prime Minister is monitoring the situation. The Prime Minister’s Office is providing necessary directives with the deputy commissioner (DC), upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and law enforcement agencies.
2. Shelter Launched
One thousand and fifty-seven shelters have been opened in the affected areas of Chittagong division. More than twelve thousand people have taken shelter.
3. Cash and Food Assistance
Under the General Relief (GR) programme, Rs 2 crore and Rs 450 metric tons of rice have been allocated for Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.
4. Emergency Services Ensuring
It has been directed to ensure safe drinking water, sanitation, healthcare, child food and three-hour meals in the affected areas.
5. The rescue operation is strong
If necessary, rescue operations have been intensified in the hilly areas through law enforcement agencies, including the deployment of the army.
6. presence in the field of public
Local MPs and public representatives are visiting the affected areas and standing by the affected people.
7. Integrated Relief Program
BNP leaders, activists, government administrations, various ministries, army, coast guard and law enforcement agencies are jointly carrying out relief and rescue operations.
8. HSC exam postponed
HSC and equivalent examinations in the affected areas have been temporarily postponed due to floods and landslides.
9. The management of the affected families
The local administration is directly visiting the homes of the victims to express condolences to the families of the victims and ensure the necessary support.
10. Long-term infrastructure planning
The Chittagong-Dohazari 47km railway line is planned to be elevated to 5 feet to reduce waterlogging. Efforts have also been taken to ensure safe housing for people at risk of hills.
The government’s expectations
Mahdi Amin said the government will be able to overcome the disaster situation quickly through quick decisions, coordinated initiatives and humanitarian assistance. He said the Prime Minister is on the side of the affected people and the government is working to ensure all necessary assistance.
