Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the transfer of Sayedabad, Gulistan and Mohakhali bus terminals to restore discipline in the long-standing traffic congestion in the capital Dhaka and restore discipline in road management.
He came up with the directive at a third round of meeting on traffic congestion and modernizing traffic management held at the secretariat on Monday.
After the meeting, two administrators of Dhaka city told reporters that these bus terminals, located at the main entrance of the capital and important commercial areas, have long identified as one of the main causes of traffic congestion. As a result, initiatives will be taken to move the terminals from the interior of the city in a phased manner to alternative places.
The meeting, chaired by the prime minister, discussed in detail the traffic management, public transport system and possible reform activities to reduce traffic congestion in different parts of the country, including the capital. The meeting also focused on improving road infrastructure, modernizing traffic control systems and making urban transport system more effective.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam and other senior officials of the ministries, divisions and agencies were present at the meeting.
The concerned think that if large bus terminals are shifted from inside the capital, the pressure of the vehicles will be reduced, the traffic flow will be normal and the city dwellers will get some relief from the suffering of the long-standing traffic congestion.
