South Korea has made a remarkable comeback to the World Cup stage. Despite conceding a goal in the first half, the Asian powerhouse kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in a thrilling second half.
South Korea and the Czech Republic faced off in a Group A match at the Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico on Friday. South Korea played an aggressive game from the start of the match. Despite a series of attacks led by experienced captain Son Heung-min, neither team was able to score in the first half.
The match turned dramatic after the break. In the 59th minute, captain Ladislav Krejci headed in a long throw from defender Vladimir Sufal, giving the Czech Republic the lead. South Korea became more aggressive after the goal was conceded.
Hwang In-beom equalized in the 67th minute by beating Czech defender Robin Hranach and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Matej Kovar. The Koreans then took complete control of the match.
The Czech Republic scored again in the 77th minute from a free kick by Tomas Soucek, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Oh Hyun-gyu seized the opportunity and scored the winning goal in the 80th minute. His shot from close range, following a perfectly placed cross from a teammate, was deflected into the net by the goalkeeper.
In the end, South Korea left the field with a 2-1 victory. On the other hand, the Czech Republic, returning to the World Cup after 20 years, had to start the tournament with a loss.
The statistics also speak for South Korea. They have lost their first match only once in the last seven World Cups. This is their eighth victory in World Cup history. Notably, the Koreans came from behind in each of their four 2-1 victories.
In addition, six of South Korea’s previous seven wins in the main round of the World Cup have come against European opponents, with another memorable victory added to that list, beating the Czech Republic.
Earlier, in the opening match of the same group, host Mexico started well by defeating South Africa 2-0. As a result, the competition for advancement to the next round in Group ‘A’ is intensifying.
