The opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has presented a ‘shadow budget’ proposal of Rs 8 lakh to Rs 505 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. The total deficit in the proposed budget is estimated at Rs 1 lakh 73 thousand 579 crore.
On Tuesday (June 9th), the party’s Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman presented the shadow budget.
Presenting the budget proposal, he said the budget is not for any political party, but for the welfare of the 18 to 20 crore people of the country. However, he stressed the need for ensuring honesty, transparency and accountability for its successful implementation.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “No budget can be implemented without honesty, transparency and accountability. No matter what the budget of the government is, people will not get the benefit of it.”
He also spoke about the political situation in the country and the recent elections. He alleged that the public opinion and referendum verdict were not properly reflected and political interference was influencing various state and social institutions.
He added that the structure of the current fiscal year (July-June) needs to be reconsidered. According to him, at the end of the financial year, especially in the monsoon season, there is a tendency to rush to implement development projects, which in many cases creates the opportunity for waste and irregularities.
Jamaat-e-Amir proposed that if Bangladesh’s financial year is adjusted to the international calendar year (January-December), further effect may come in the implementation of the development project. Jamaat
