The Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has hinted at performing the two duties at the same time after he was elected president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Responding to a question from reporters at the foreign ministry on Thursday, he said there is no need to make a decision on leaving the post of foreign minister and there is such a precedent in the past.
He cited the example of Humayun Rashid Chowdhury, who was elected UNGA president for a 1986-87 term, who successfully performed two duties at the same time. Khalilur Rahman said he worked with him at the time and thought it was possible from that experience.
In a dialogue in New York, he said he could serve as the UNGA president with a one-year leave without resigning. He won the election with 99 votes, where his rival Kakouris got 91 votes. After returning home, he was greeted and is now under discussion about his double duty.
