  • In his message on the occasion of the Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day-2026, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that democracy has been re-established in the country by upholding the democratic values, people’s rights and equality, as embodied in the spirit of Ekushey. The current government is firmly committed to further consolidating this progress.

In his message on Friday, he remembered with deep respect the martyrs of the 1952 language movement and said that the sacrifices made to protect the dignity of the mother tongue, Bengali, have strengthened the foundation of Bengalis’ freedom, democracy and cultural consciousness. Bangladesh achieved independence through the Liberation War along the path of Ekushey.

The Prime Minister mentioned that the Bengali language is the main vehicle of our identity. In recognition of the sacrifices made for the language, February 21 is observed as ‘International Mother Language Day’ around the world. The spirit of Ekushey is now a global movement for the dignity and protection of all languages.

In his message, he reiterated the commitment to build a self-reliant, humane and democratic state by embodying the aspirations of the language martyrs. He also called for preserving linguistic diversity, protecting our own culture and traditions, and ensuring the practice of pure Bengali at all levels. Finally, he prayed for the forgiveness of the language martyrs and hoped for the success of all the programs of the day.
