U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran could respond to a new U.S. resolution to end the cease-fire and ongoing tensions.
“The answer may come tonight,” Trump told reporters on Friday and Bangladesh time Saturday. “I hope to receive a letter at night. Then we will see where the situation goes.”
The U.S. president did not give details on what kind of proposal was made to Iran.
The U.S. Navy claimed to have attacked two Iranian oil tankers on Thursday night. The U.S. claims that the tanker was trying to disobey two naval blockades. Two ships were reported to have been killed in the attack.
Tensions in the Middle East have erupted after the United States and Israel attacked various Iranian facilities on February 28. There was a forty-day conflict between the two sides.
In response, Iran targeted U.S. military installations in the Middle East. Tehran has announced the closure of Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important routes to global energy trade.
Washington and Tehran later agreed to a two-week ceasefire on April 8th, mediated by Pakistan. The ceasefire was due to expire on April 22nd, but the Trump administration later announced an indefinite extension.
International observers believe that Iran’s possible response could have a significant impact on the current situation in the Middle East.
